Empathy has emerged as a critical skill in contemporary society, one that parents ought to teach their children. While this statement is widely recognized, there are segments of society that fail to instil empathy in young individuals, leading to catastrophic outcomes. As such, the purpose of this article is to examine the reasons why parents should teach their children empathy skills.
Firstly, it is essential to note that empathy is a vital skill that helps children and young adults develop appropriate relationships and strong morality that can be shared with others. This can lead to opportunities for success as they transition into adulthood. Therefore, it is imperative to teach empathy, particularly from a young age.
Secondly, children with empathy skills can react to abuse and bullying situations if they witness them. This helpfulness can enrich sensitivity and morality among people living in the same town, city, or even country, as abusers might stop their behaviour depending on the reaction of others. This can lead to the creation of a more comfortable and convenient social environment.
Thirdly, children with empathy skills are more sensitive to other people and their environments. This is particularly vital in contemporary society, where ecological problems are prevalent. Empathetic individuals are better equipped to understand the importance of our surroundings, problems with pollution, climate change, and other issues that must be addressed by people.
Fourthly, there is a lack of consideration for others due to a lack of empathy and sensitivity skills. Media outlets may use vulnerable individuals to increase viewership, which can be detrimental. This issue, however, is a separate topic that can elaborate on the problem of manipulation.
In conclusion, teaching empathy skills to children is crucial for creating a better society and a better future. Parents ought to instil empathy in their children to cultivate a sense of responsibility towards others and the environment.
