Prevalent cartoons that can be seen in any cinema are adapted for specific age groups, and all producers would like to create a universal production that would be loved by the entire audience. I assume that The Super Mario Bros Movie is an attempt to appeal to everyone, and... they probably succeed! This publication will be a kind of review, although this text is more of a loose reflection after going to the cinema with my family to see this film.
It can be said that Super Mario is familiar and famous throughout the whole world due to... what exactly? The games featuring his character? Or maybe for a completely different reason? I vividly remember playing the first game with the moustachioed hero on a console from China (it was called "Pegasus" and it was a knockoff of the Nintendo Entertainment System). This console was the only way to play the game in Poland, but I had fun with it. However, I am only describing my personal experience with the game, and this doesn't answer the question of what young people today remember about Mario. I know that Nintendo is still creating games featuring Mario on the Nintendo Switch, but many children in Poland may not be familiar with the latest games or consoles. Nevertheless, they still go to the cinema with their parents to see this movie. Maybe it is the nostalgia of the older generation that creates a desire for children to watch it? In my opinion, this phenomenon is unique.
Moving on to the movie itself, I would rate the cartoon 9/10. The plot is simple and straightforward, mixing the imaginary world with the real world and creating twists as well as settings in different landscapes. The characters and dialogue are assembled in a fun way. The soundtrack and editing are refined to a very high level. The symbolism included in the movie is also simple and gives the audience the moral "don't give up, fight for your dreams". The climax and resolution are a little bit shocking to me, despite the predictable story. I wouldn't like to spoil it for you, but there may be a chance for a second part of the movie in the future.
My whole family had fun, including my daughter, son, and wife. After leaving the cinema, we had sensations and emotions to share with each other.
In conclusion, I can recommend this movie to anyone regardless of their age. It's definitely worth seeing.
